People are still watching my 100 Reasons Videos, they're still checking out this blog, and they still hate J.J. Abrams' "STAR TREK XI."What's the big deal you ask? There are many, many people out there who simply didn't like this movie, were literally 'offended.'
How can anyone be 'offended' by a movie? Well, there are many reasons people have listed. I've listed reasons why the movie is just plain terrible, but the fact is there are reasons which go beyond 'bad filmmaking.' People feel that Star Trek has been hijacked. Its name applied to something that barely resembles 'Star Trek.' The complaints against the critics of this movie and its director are astonishingly shallow, and never has a single 'fan' explained just 'why' the movie is good, or why they liked it as much as they did, and why it was enough to make them so angry as to come here and post vicious, derogatory comments about us.
The most common comment I get from a critic is "Thank you for letting me know there are others out there who hated this movie." Why do people feel this way? Not 'why' do they hate it, but why feel a need to 'know' they are not alone? A lot of people hated 'THE MUMMY RETURNS' and they didn't care much about whether people like them existed... Aha...this is very different isn't it? Star Trek means more to people than a couple movies and a TV series. Star Trek is many things, and one of them is that it is an artistic expression of various philosophical principles, ideas, and even emotional ones as well. Some greedy movie moguls took something that meant something to millions of people and turned it upside-down and inside-out, and made a kind of mockery of it. (And mocked those original fans).
I was sent an email with some pictures from the movie, and the person suggested that there were subliminal messages in the phaser beams in space, I looked close, and ideed there were...in the pictures they sent. The problem is that I cannot verify with clarity that these messages were in the original film, but it could be possible, I don't know. If someone has the ability to get high quality screen shots of this movie, and check it out, it would be something very important. Some of the messages on the shots they sent me said things like "William Shatner sucks," "The Original Series Sucks" etc. They were there, but I have no idea if they were photoshopped. IF these messages are really there, you have a smoking gun as to the true intentions of the producers. Send me more, or verifications, or better images if you care to take the time to look and I will post them there along with your own articles and thoughts about this. I simply do not have the time to look into this, but it is very curious, and wouldn't surprise me if there were really there.
Someone has made a FACEBOOK page for this blog, this was not me, I didn't know it existed until a couple weeks ago, I am not personally associated with it. Join if you like, but I am not posting there, it has 65 members currently.
There are many creative and intelligent people coming out of the woodwork who also are 'offended' by this movie, and some have their own blogs, and the resentment towards this movie has not ended, nor will it end any time soon. People do like Star Trek, and want to see something of its truer essence again. They aren't going to give up, with 5 series under their belts and 10 movies.
I believe it would have been better if Star Trek XI had been a TV Pilot, 'ratings' would have guided that reboot into something Star Trek fans would have liked better. They couldn't have gotten away with what they did in the movie if it were a TV show. Star Trek remains better as a TV Series than a movie series.
It would be interesting to me to have a new Star Trek TV Series that takes place after TNG, with characters in a future beyond it. But, then, this would take creativity, intelligence and art, something that modern hollywood has little or none of these days. I thank everyone again for submitting articles, artwork, and comments who have supported this site, and the videos. I shall continue to post my own thoughts here periodically, and if anyone does have more to say, I will gladly post it here for all to see.
When I first saw the bootleg of a silly little film calling itself "Star Trek", I was physically sick for about fifteen minutes. Then, I began to laugh. I laughed so much, it hurt. I began to realize that this was a parody. Not a great one like the old SNL sketches, but a very funny use of lens flares and Star Wars ships and FX.
ReplyDeleteThe idea that Kirk was a cocky puke who would let a love struck Spock get the upper hand on him was a riot!
Zoe Saldana seemed a bit out of her depth, though. She was too hot to be funny.
The Romulan piloting the Blooming Onion was the funniest thing. He was so over the top,I was sure it was Michael Richards going crazy again!
Sulu being older than Kirk cracked me the hell UP!!! OMG, I shouted! Sulu reaches his forties before Kirk! What a laugh!!!And playing him as a pothead with a light saber fixation was a stroke of comic genius.
Constructing the Enterprise on Earth was confusing at first, but then I saw that it was made out of a Frisbee, two flashlights and a blow dryer. I almost peed myself!!
Can't wait for this hoot to show up on Comedy Central someday. I wouldn't pay or barter to see it, but showing it with commercials, giving me time to catch my breath from all the laughing I'll do may make it tolerable.
Kudos to JarJar Abrams and his sons for crafting what will surely be considered a comedy masterpiece someday.
I agree, making a Star Trek series - and I mean a good one based on Gene's values, would be the best step right now. Rick Berman might be out of it, but there are others who knew and worked with Gene who could bring out his message in a great manner. But, give it to a someone who knows trek, not to a director who stated that he never ever watched Trek, and he hates it. Yes, not once a "fan" convinced me why they like this movie, all very shallow meaningless immature reasons, resembling the least the audiences they set themselves after. In regard to Star Trek XI and Abrams, I said it before, and I'll always say it until the last breathe in my soul, they both suck. Those people who hate this crap need to step out, come out of their shell and post about it freely, not like Paramount would ever care, but it's the right thing to do. This movie IS not Star TREK. Thanks again for this blog, maybe I'll check out the facekbook group too! take care
ReplyDeleteI have to say, this article sums up why I still feel so frustrated. I re-watched "how techies changed the world" recently, a documentary about scientific advancements inspired by Star Trek. The truth is, it's far more then just a TV show, and I feel like this latest movie was the final nail in the coffin.
ReplyDeleteI would hope to see a new Trek show that'd stay true to the original values that made it great. The best idea, in my opinion, would be to set it years in the future, after TNG. This way, the series would be allowed to evolve and rediscover itself, while staying true to it's universe and ideas. This is what they did with TNG, and it worked perfectly. Doctor Who did something similar with it's relaunch, and while the new show is definitely different from the old one, it does stay true to it's roots, while being accessible to new viewers.
It's possible to bring new fans while pleasing the old ones, it just requires hard work and a good understanding of what makes the show great.
